MARIANNE FAITHFULL: “The weekend after Mick got out of jail at the end of June, I took Mick and Michael Cooper and Michael’s son, Adam, to my father’s college, Brazier’s Park. I couldn’t think of anywhere else we could go and not be hounded. We had a wonderful time. It was very odd, naturally. My father is wildly eccentric, the food was awful (and Mick is very fussy about his food). Brazier’s was catnip to eccentrics. There were little groups of people sitting around a table and someone asking ‘And what did you appreciate today, Nigel?’ And Nigel would be saying something like ‘I saw a tractor!’ My stepbrothers, from Glynn’s second marriage, were there completing each others sentences like characters out of a Tom Stoppard play. I took Mick and Michael around the attics and parapets where I used to play as a child. I wanted Mick to see where I had come from.”
